Dr. Yukio Kinoshita is the Professor of Agri-food Systems at the Faculty of Environmental Studies, Tokyo City University (TCU) and an Adjunct Research Professor at the University of South Australia. Before joining the TCU in April 2024, he was an Associate Professor at Iwate University, Japan. In his younger days, Yukio studied irrigation policy and economics at Australian universities, such as the University of New England in Armidale and La Trobe University in Albury/Wodonga. He received his Ph. D of Agricultural Economics from the University of Tokyo.
He has published fascinating academic papers and book chapters that compare farm management styles and agri-environmental policies among developed countries, including Japan, Korea, Australia, the US, and the EU. His research focus is increasingly on the ‘greener transformation (GX)’ in the agri-food sector. He has played many functional roles in national- and local-level public organisations, such as the National Council of Food, Agriculture and Rural Area Policies and the Ministry Awards Committee of Excellent Farm Management.
Over the last two decades, Yukio has worked passionately on farm business education to promote the Japanese farm industry. He has not only published popular textbooks of farm business management targeting high school students and beginner farmers but also developed and delivered good examples of training programs within and beyond university audiences to encourage innovative farmers. Because his activities and reputation as a farm educator extends to Korea, he was appointed the Korea-Japan honorary ambassador for agriculture and fishery international exchange in 2010.
He attended his first International Farm Management Association (IFMA) Congress held in Scotland in 2017 and has been a semi-regular participant in sharing frontline knowledge on global farm management. A leading study on Japanese farm management by him was published in the International Journal of Agricultural Management (https://ageconsearch.umn.edu/record/329817). In addition, he has contributed to the annual IFMA Country Reports. He was elected to be a new council member of the IFMA in July 2024.
