PL2.4_PR – RETHINKING AFRICAN AGRICULTURE: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES IN A GLOBALISING WORLD
Abstract:
Increasing agricultural productivity and competitiveness holds the key to achieving sustainable growth and development in Africa. The continent is characterized by diversity in farming systems, in agro ecology, in culture and in consumption patterns. Challenges abound and strategies to exploit opportunities presented by globalization are often unclear or non-existent.
Rethinking African Agriculture should enable the transformation of the economies to develop innovative ways to boost productivity in a sustainable way, leading to the creation of rural opportunities for more inclusive growth, especially for women and youth, given the aging farm population. It should also lead to the improvement of access to productive resources in order to reduce yield gaps, the promotion of collective action and public-private partnership arrangements, the minimization of food waste, as well as re-thinking the entire value chain to capture the bigger picture in Agricultural transformation.
